Over the course of this project, I have learned how important education is. These students in Zimbabwe are not getting a real education and their generation is struggling to even have teachers, despite how much they want an education. Here in America, we have free public school that can be just as good as a private school education, but in Zimbabwe they must pay for any schooling, and they are not getting any education because the teachers keep going on strike. This country used to have one of the best educational systems in southern Africa and now it is dooming its children.

After this class I will probably still look up news about Zimbabwe to see if they ever successfully work through the problems. I’m not sure what I can do to help directly, because I don’t have any money and I’m trying to focus on my schooling, so that after I graduate I can do stuff to help countries with problems like this.

Freedoms

The students that were arrested for speaking out against other students having a scholarships taken away did not deserve to be arrested. Freedom of speech should be a right, not a privilege, especially since those students should not have had their scholarships taken away. This is somewhat backtracking in a country whose government should be trying harder to work together.

Struggle Over Exams

This continuous struggle over getting students registered for exams, then paying for them, and now when the exams are going to happen is very confusing. Although dates have finally been set, they are very late compared to normal and this brings doubt about if students will have the time they need to finish their exams and do well on them. However, the extensions and loans are hopefully providing many more students chances to take their exams, so each side has its pros and cons. Most of the atricles I have found have focused on the exams, so maybe that means everything is heading in the right direction.

Frustrating

So far, the government in Zimbabwe’s inability to tackle the educational problems it is facing is very much frustrating me. It shouldn’t be that hard for a country that used to have one of the best educational systems in Africa to fix the major issues caused by it’s President. Mugabe needs to give up his power and let Tsvangirai take over completely. Tsvangirai won the election, and from what it seems, is trying to help the country but Mugabe is in the way. Mugabe’s section of the unity government is arresting students and removing people from a tax funded scholarship for supporting the Movement for Democratic Change, even though the MDC supporters pay tax just like the rest of Zimbabweans and therefore are supporting these students just as much as Mugabe’s political party. I’m just getting frustrated with the lack of change in a country that so desperatly needs it.

Bad News

If the schools already gave exams like they’re saying they did, this could be very detrimental to the cause of having all the students take their exams with loans. That was a very good way for students whose parents couldn’t pay everything at once to still be able to take their exams but the schools may have ruined it. Their claim of a lack of communication just seems like an excuse, because I’m sure as soon as it was announced that the deadline was extended the news was probably spread everywhere. The schools are just trying to make up for the fact that they gave exams earlier than they should. Hopefully, this doesn’t prevent other students from taking their exams. The schools or the government should cover the extra costs for re-doing exams for the students, it shouldn’t affect the amount the students have to pay.

UNICEF

UNICEF has been helping this country out so much, and donating so much money. I just hope this money is getting in the hands of the right people. As long as it is, it will be a real help in aiding Zimbabwean students. They need help and support to finish their schooling and get a legit education. The country seems to finally be heading towards getting itself out of this hole it created.

Finally a (Hopeful) Fix!

In regards to the money for exams issue, something good has finally happened. The deadline has been extended, and there are loans for students to pay the fees. This is hopefully going to help a lot, and allow the parents to pay monthly fees instead of everything at once. The only thing I’m worried about is parents still not being able to afford the monthly fees, since they can barely afford the normal school fees, and some pay in food. But hopefully they can do it, or more help comes through during the process. No matter what, this is a step in the right direction, and I’m anxious to see what follows.

No Money for Exams

Lately almost all of the news I can find is about how almost none of the students have the money to sit their exams and have missed the deadline. It has been said that the deadline cannot be extended, so students who have not already registered have no chance to take the exams.

This is very depressing. This country needs its’ students to sit these exams and continue their education. Zimbabwe is dooming itself, failing the generation that will run it in about twenty year, and leaving them in poverty. They need to be trying a lot harder to help these students. Tsvangirai needs to come up with some way for all the students to take it, like he said he would.

Prime Minister Claims Help

The Prime Minister, Tsvangirai, is saying he will make sure all students take their exams. This, I feel, is a very good thing, if he can follow through with it. Mugabe may get in the way, or there may not be the money to do it. But these students NEED to take their exam, so they can stay in school and continue with their education. I just hope Tsvangirai can make this happen, or else the country may be in worse shape than before.
